5.3 Horizons as Response Boundaries, Not Geometric Mysteries

Event horizons occupy a peculiar position in gravitational interpretation. Formally, they are among the cleanest structures in general relativity: null surfaces defined by causal accessibility. Interpretively, they have accumulated a dense halo of metaphysical speculation.

This accumulation is not a consequence of the equations. It is a consequence of reading geometric boundaries as if they were physical agents.

In general relativity, an event horizon marks the boundary beyond which signals cannot reach future null infinity. It says nothing, by itself, about forces, barriers, surfaces, or physical membranes. Yet horizons are routinely narrated as if they do something: trap information, block escape, or separate regions of reality.

The RST Stripping: Causal Inaccessibility vs. Causal Mechanism

Under RST, a horizon is not a place where gravity becomes infinite. It is a boundary where finite substrate response can no longer support coordinated interaction across scales relevant to external observers.

As collapse proceeds, stress–energy becomes increasingly concentrated. Communication, synchronization, and coherent tracking across regions become progressively restricted. At some point, the substrate can no longer maintain bidirectional, recoverable coupling between interior and exterior degrees of freedom. The horizon marks that point.

Nothing dramatic “happens” at the horizon locally. No force spikes; no material surface is encountered. What changes is relational: the system crosses a threshold beyond which coordinated response across the boundary is no longer physically supportable.

Dissolving the "Trapping" Narrative

Much of the mystery surrounding horizons arises from treating causal inaccessibility as if it required a causal mechanism. It does not. Inaccessibility can result from saturation just as naturally as from obstruction.

  • 🚫 Information is not “trapped”: It becomes inaccessible because the substrate can no longer support the correlations required to retrieve it across the boundary.
  • 🚫 Horizons do not “emit”: Thermal behavior arises from the interaction between finite operational clocks and constrained access to field correlations—not from a physical "membrane" radiating particles.

Horizons are not objects. They are not agents. They are not mechanisms.
They are boundaries of admissible response.

The Limit of Description

The horizon marks a limit. Beyond that limit, certain descriptions cease to be physically meaningful—not because reality fails, but because the conditions required to support those descriptions do. By reading horizons this way, RST avoids treating them as physical membranes or portals to hidden phases.

This reading preserves the predictive structure of general relativity while preventing the interpretive escalation that turns causal boundaries into metaphysical thresholds. It also prepares the ground for understanding black hole thermodynamics without invoking paradox-generating assumptions about global unitary evolution.
